More shoppers now start with a question instead of a search: “a vitamin C serum for sensitive skin under 200 AED”, “a gift for my father who likes coffee”. If ChatGPT answers with someone else’s products, that sale is gone before your store ever loaded.
This guide explains how a Shopify store gets into those answers in October 2026, what each route can and can’t do, and a checklist you can work through this week.
The short answer. There are three routes, and most stores need more than one:
- Shopify Agentic Storefronts: your catalog flows into ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini from the Shopify admin. Free, but purchases through these channels are currently limited to US buyers.
- Being the answer (AEO): ChatGPT search reads the open web. Clear product data, crawlable pages and mentions on other sites decide whether it recommends you, in any country and language.
- Your own ChatGPT app (a GPT Store): a branded app inside ChatGPT, built on your catalog, that answers in Arabic or English and sends shoppers to your checkout.
First: where does the shopper actually pay?
In late 2025 OpenAI and Stripe launched Instant Checkout and the Agentic Commerce Protocol, which let shoppers pay without leaving ChatGPT. That model has since given way to a discovery-first one. Today, when a shopper buys a Shopify product they found in ChatGPT, the purchase finishes on your own store, in an in-app browser on mobile or a new window on desktop.
That is good news for you. You keep your checkout, your payment methods, your customer data and your relationship with the buyer. ChatGPT’s job is to find and recommend; your store’s job is to close.
Route 1: Shopify Agentic Storefronts
Agentic Storefronts is a sales channel inside the Shopify admin (Settings → Sales channels → Agentic Storefronts). It sends your products, through Shopify Catalog, to AI shopping surfaces: ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app.
What Shopify says about it:
- It’s on by default for stores whose products are eligible for Shopify Catalog. There is nothing to install.
- There are no transaction fees beyond your standard payment processing rates.
- You choose which AI partners receive your product data.
- You remain the merchant of record.
The catch for stores in the Gulf. Purchasing through these channels is currently limited to buyers in the United States. ChatGPT and Copilot are open to stores selling to US buyers wherever the store is based; AI Mode and Gemini are limited to selected US-based shops. If your customers are in the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Kuwait, Agentic Storefronts doesn’t sell to them yet. Leave it switched on, keep your product data clean for the day it expands, and rely on routes 2 and 3 for your actual market.
How to make the most of it anyway:
- Check the channel status in your admin and see which products are excluded and why.
- Fill in product type, vendor, variants (size, colour) and GTIN or barcode where you have them.
- Write titles that say what the product is (“Vitamin C serum 30 ml for sensitive skin”), not just a brand name.
- Keep price and stock accurate. An AI that recommends an out-of-stock item learns not to trust your feed.
Route 2: be the answer ChatGPT gives (AEO)
When ChatGPT searches the web, it relies on OpenAI’s search crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI’s own documentation is clear: sites that block OAI-SearchBot aren’t shown in ChatGPT’s search answers. This route works in every country and in Arabic, and it’s where most Gulf stores win or lose today.
This is answer engine optimization (AEO). The essentials for a Shopify store:
- Let the right crawlers in. Allow
OAI-SearchBot(ChatGPT search),PerplexityBotandBingbotin your robots.txt. BlockingGPTBot, which collects training data, is a separate choice and doesn’t remove you from ChatGPT search. - Structured product data. Product, Offer (price, currency, availability) and review markup on every product page. Most Shopify themes include the basics; check that price and availability are right.
- Pages that answer questions. “Which serum for oily skin?”, “What’s the difference between these two?”, “Do you deliver to Riyadh?” Put the answers on your site, in your customers’ words, in Arabic and English.
- Be mentioned elsewhere. AI assistants trust what other sites say about you: marketplaces, review sites, “best of” lists, press. A store nobody else mentions is rarely recommended.
- Test it. Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, in both languages, once a month. Note who it recommends and which sites it cites. That list is your to-do list.
Stores on other platforms, or Shopify stores that want more control, can also apply to send a product feed directly to OpenAI through chatgpt.com/merchants. Access has been by application.
Route 3: your own app inside ChatGPT (a GPT Store)
ChatGPT has an app directory. Since December 2025, businesses can submit apps built with OpenAI’s Apps SDK, which is based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP). OpenAI reviews each app before it is listed.
For a store, that means a branded shopping assistant that lives inside ChatGPT:
- The shopper types in their own words, in Arabic or English, and gets your products as answers, with real photos, prices and stock from your catalog.
- They can compare products, ask follow-up questions and get bundle suggestions.
- Every buy button opens your product page or cart, so checkout stays on your store.
- You control which products and claims appear, and you can see what shoppers ask.
Unlike Agentic Storefronts, your app isn’t limited to US buyers, and unlike AEO, you don’t depend on ChatGPT choosing you among competitors once the shopper is in your app. The trade-off is that it’s a build project: someone has to design, connect, test and publish it, and keep it in sync with your catalog.
Which route is right for your store?
| Agentic Storefronts | AEO | Your own ChatGPT app | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who it reaches | US buyers (for now) | Everyone using ChatGPT search | Shoppers who open your app |
| Arabic | Depends on your product data | Yes | Yes, built in |
| Where they pay | Your store | Your store | Your store |
| Cost | Free | Your time or an agency | One-time build |
| Effort | Low: check and clean data | Ongoing | A project, then light upkeep |
| Best for | Stores selling to the US | Every store | Brands with a catalog worth exploring |
For most Gulf brands the order is: fix AEO first (it protects the sales you already have), keep Agentic Storefronts switched on, and add your own app when you want a branded experience that doesn’t depend on ranking.
A checklist for this week
- In Shopify, open Settings → Sales channels → Agentic Storefronts and check which products are excluded.
- Check your robots.txt:
OAI-SearchBotmust not be blocked. - Open three best-selling product pages and confirm the title, price, currency and stock are right in the page’s structured data (Google’s Rich Results Test shows it).
- Add a short FAQ to your top three product or collection pages, in Arabic and English.
- Ask ChatGPT five questions your customers ask. Write down who it recommends and which sites it cites.
- Get listed where those cited sites are: marketplaces, directories, review platforms.
Frequently asked questions
Can shoppers in the UAE or Saudi Arabia buy my Shopify products through ChatGPT?
They can find your products through ChatGPT search and buy on your store. Through Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts channel specifically, purchasing is currently limited to US buyers. A store’s own ChatGPT app isn’t limited that way.
Does selling on ChatGPT cost anything?
Shopify says Agentic Storefronts adds no transaction fees beyond your normal payment processing. Showing up in ChatGPT search is free. Building your own ChatGPT app is a one-time project.
Do I need Shopify Plus?
No. Agentic Storefronts is available to Shopify merchants whose products are eligible for Shopify Catalog. Plus stores with heavy checkout customizations should test checkout from each AI channel.
Will blocking GPTBot hide my store from ChatGPT?
No. GPTBot is OpenAI’s training crawler. ChatGPT’s search answers use OAI-SearchBot. You can block one and allow the other.
